Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are custom-made porcelain shells that adhere to the surface of your teeth. They can cover any teeth in the front of your mouth to enhance their appearance when you smile.

Porcelain veneers are also stain-resistant, so you never have to worry about tooth discoloration. If you’re unhappy with the way your teeth look, veneers may be right for you.

Why should I consider veneers?

Dr. Zacher may recommend veneers if you have cosmetic concerns that you want to hide. Instead of performing costly, invasive surgery to restore or reshape your teeth, veneers can cover these imperfections with minimal time and discomfort. You may consider porcelain veneers to cover:

  • Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Worn teeth from bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Overly short teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Slightly crooked teeth

Custom-made veneers appear natural and blend in with the shade of your teeth. They can provide a more polished, uniform, “Hollywood” smile in as little as two visits to Dr. Zacher’s office.

What can I expect from the veneers process?

If you’re interested in porcelain veneers, Dr. Zacher performs a comprehensive dental exam that includes digital X-rays and a professional dental cleaning. Next, he removes a minimal amount of enamel to make room for the veneers. This process prevents your veneers from appearing bulky or unnatural.

Finally, Dr. Zacher takes impressions of your teeth to create your veneers. Since custom-made veneers take about 2-3 weeks to create, you must wear temporary restorations in the meantime. Temporary veneers protect your teeth from damage while you transition to your permanent restorations.

At your final appointment, Dr. Zacher removes the temporary models and replaces them with your permanent veneers. He makes any necessary adjustments to ensure the proper fit before cementing them in place. You can eat, drink, and enjoy your new veneers immediately after your appointment.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers last about 10-30 years with proper care. While veneers require no special care, you should avoid eating sticky, chewy, or hard candies to preserve their function.

Wearing a nightguard is also essential if you have bruxism (teeth grinding). If your veneers crack from too much pressure, Dr. Zacher can replace them with a new restoration.
